HNPW 2025: Protection Advocacy as First Line Response

Featuring reflections from several national protection leaders working in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt), Sudan and Ethiopia, this discussion aims to bring greater understanding, nuance and support to protection advocacy as a critical aspect of frontline emergency responses amidst conflict.

The discussion and exchange will be framed around the following guiding questions:

  • Why should advocacy for compliance and accountability with international law be considered critical to an emergency response in the context of conflict? How is it integral to and aligned with principled and effective humanitarian action?
  • What type of advocacy tactics do communities and local organizations, as first responders, employ to improve their protection? How can these efforts be further enabled and amplified?
  • How do locally and nationally led protection advocacy efforts connect to humanitarian coordination, policymaking and other decision-making spaces? How can these efforts spur action by duty bearers to mitigate harm to civilians from the earliest stages of a crisis?
