The global protection landscape continues to deteriorate as a result of intersecting crises, including escalating armed conflicts and climate-related disasters. Thousands of civilians have been killed or injured, and millions displaced, as crises deepen across regions. Climate-induced disasters, including floods, droughts, and cyclones, have significantly exacerbated humanitarian needs, particularly in Asia and Africa, where communities face displacement and food insecurity.
This Global Protection Update provides an overview of protection developments through the last quarter of 2024. The report also introduces an analysis focusing on individuals exposed to protection risks rather than only those identified as in need. This new approach highlights the factors driving harm, such as attacks on civilians, disinformation, and family separation, which are fuelled by armed conflict, political instability, and weak accountability for violations of international humanitarian law.
Flooding and other climate-related disasters have been a significant feature of this year’s crises, increasing risks in already fragile contexts. The report emphasises the need for responses that address both humanitarian and climate-related challenges while promoting resilience in affected communities.
