GPC Protection Conversation: Key Considerations on Cash for Protection in Specialised/Standalone Protection Programming

The Global Protection Cluster is pleased to be hosting the third of a new series of public events, entitled the ‘Protection Conversation Series’, aimed at advancing shared discussions and reflection with protection allies on key trends and priorities, innovative approaches, and scalable solutions to some of the most pressing protection risks facing crisis-affected communities around the world.

This third Protection Conversation will focus on ‘Key considerations on Cash for Protection in Specialised/Standalone protection programmingand will take place virtually on 3 September from 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM CET on TEAMs. The session has been organised by the Cash for Protection Task Team.

Cash & Voucher Assistance (CVA) is one of the fastest growing humanitarian assistance modalities given its advantages for crisis-affected populations. While there is interest and motivation amongst protection practitioners to reap the benefits of CVA in Protection programming, there is a general lack of agreement and standardised terminology related to CVA for Protection.

The GPC Task Team on Cash for Protection established a sub-working group of its members to work on creating cohesive and widely agreed on definitions for technical terms related to Cash for Protection. This session will present the ‘Key considerations on Cash for Protection in Specialised/Standalone protection programming’ note, supporting protection and cash practitioners working in emergencies and humanitarian response to better understand and consider the use of Cash and Voucher Assistance (CVA) as an assistance modality to contribute to a protection outcome within specialised protection programming.  The note is part of a series, aiming to provide a joint understanding of what cash for protection entails, based on existing policies and practices, and outline minimum requirements and key approaches throughout the protection continuum (protection mainstreaming, protection integration and stand-alone/specialized protection) to promote globally and integrate into program design.

The Protection Conversation Series is an important space for inter-agency dialogue and sharing on key protection issues, approaches and learnings. The Protection Conversations are led by different partners and do not necessarily reflect the positions, definitions or guidance of the GPC.
