Protection Issues
Chad continue to host people fleeing violence linked to insecurity and multiple attacks carried out in neighbouring countries including Cameroon, Nigeria and Niger in its western part, Sudan to the east, and the Central African Republic to the south. For about a decade, the country has also experienced internal displacement due to the persistence of incursions and attacks by non-state armed groups in the Lake Chad Basin and its surroundings. Despite humanitarian interventions, the large presence of displaced populations leads to great pressure on resources, which threatens social cohesion and peaceful coexistence. Priority protection risks include attacks on civilians, kidnapping and abduction, family separation and presence of mines and other explosive ordnance.

About the Protection Cluster
The Protection Cluster in Chad was initially activated in 2007 to respond to the protection needs of people affected by the crisis in the eastern part of the country, resulting from conflicts in the Darfur region of Sudan, and later on to internally displaced persons and returnees experiencing protracted displacement in Lac Province. The Protection Cluster is led by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and co-coordinated by the International Rescue Committee (IRC). The Cluster includes thematic workstreams on Gender-Based Violence and Child Protection.
