About the Gender-Based Violence in Emergencies
Gender-Based Violence in Emergencies (GBViE) is a critical, life-threatening protection concern that intensifies during crises as state protection systems break down.
With 1 in 3 women and girls worldwide experiencing violence in their lifetime, prioritizing GBViE response is essential, particularly as risks of sexual assault and harmful practices, such as child marriage, spike in humanitarian settings.
GBV remains a critical, life-saving response in humanitarian emergencies, focused on prevention and ensuring all women, girls, and at-risk persons have access to specialized care.
UNFPA is the Lead Agency for the Gender-Based Violence thematic/specialized area within the consolidated Global Protection Cluster (GPC) and the Provider of Last Resort.
The GBV leadership within the Protection Cluster ensures that GBV is integrated into protection strategies, risks and needs analysis, prioritized and visible, and partners supported to implement effective inter-agency GBV prevention and response capacities, so that women and girls and other populations at risk, have timely access to survivor-centered specialized GBV services that meet their needs.
